So, I work with kids between the ages of 0 and 12. I spend some time with them as I drive them to visits they have with their parents. (The kids I work with are living in some form of out-of-home placement.) The other day at work I was driving a six-year-old girl to the office to see her mom. I had just reminded her that I had to eat all the time because there’s a baby growing in my tummy. This six-year-old girl, who I’ll call Emily (not her real name), proceeded to tell me that my baby’s having a lot of fun in my tummy. This made me smile, which was great, because I’m not super fond of this girl. Don’t get me wrong, I adore a lot of the kids I work with, but some just get on your nerves more than others. She is one of those kids. Anyway, she continued:

Starting next month, Dan and I will be attending a 12-week class on the Bradley Method. It’s taught by a Doula and was highly recommended to us by our next door neighbors, who just successfully delivered their daughter naturally. We’re attracted to this course in particular because its perspective is that childbirth does not necessarily need medical intervention and its goal is to educate the pregnant woman and her partner in order to create an empowered childbirth experience. I definitely want to minimize intervention as much as possible throughout the course of labor and delivery and I feel that this class will help Dan and I achieve that goal.

From the instructor’s website:

My Bradley Method ® classes focus on the pregnancy and birth process as a state of wellness: centered on the knowledge that all aspects of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum are delicately interwoven.

The emphasis of the class is on equipping the pregnant woman and her partner with the many tools that can help them achieve a beautiful and natural delivery. Topics include nutrition, exercise, gestation, stages of labor, delivery, breastfeeding, newborn babies, postpartum, etc.

The focus of my teaching and support is on prevention to avoid unnecessary intervention. The ultimate goal of the class and my doula support is optimal health and wellness for both mother and baby.

And I mean that in all seriousness. I’ve been feeling great. I’ve been essentially feeling like my old, pre-pregnant self, just with a foggier head, bigger appetite, less coordination and more gas. Which, since I feel so good otherwise, is totally manageable, and (dare I say it?) kinda FUN! I’ve been regularly feeling the baby move, which has been such a thrill. It’s such a great confirmation that a real, live human being is growing in there! Plus, I’ve been enjoying looking pregnant, not like I just ate a bit too much Mexican food. Finding maternity clothes without spending a fortune hasn’t been the easiest job in the world, especially since I’m not a huge fan of shopping. But I believe I’ve managed to put together enough outfits to at least avoid repeats in a work week. Another fun development is that I have officially succumbed to the waddle. I resisted it for a while. I found myself holding my tummy in for no apparent reason. I figured out that I was in the cross over stage between normal walk and pregnant walk. Now, my belly is just big enough that I have to swing my hips to walk comfortably. And boy do I swing them! I jut that belly forward and waddle just as proud as can be! Read the rest of this entry »

Yes, what my uterus is accomplishing right now is so mind blowing that I totally support putting a porcelain vase on our mantle to commemorate its role in the creation of life. The further along I get in this pregnancy (not to mention the better I feel), the more I am reverentially in awe of my whole body, and my uterus in particular. It may sound trite, but I am totally feeling like a creator goddess. With my engorged breasts, and full, fecund belly, I am in awe of what my body is capable of. I mean, I always knew it could do this, but now that it’s happening, I’m completely captivated with wonderment and feel so incredibly powerful. It’s absolutely miraculous and uteruses around the world should be sanctified. This vase is a good start!
